This summer the park staff at Fort Raleigh in Manteo have created a new program for park visitors about the Lost Colony Drama at the Waterside Theater, written by Paul Green. Ranger Mike Anderson reports that he recently read the new Paul Green anthology of essays as a way to inform their new program development. The anthology, published by Blair last summer, is entitled Paul Green: North Carolina Writers on the Legacy of the State’s Most Celebrated Playwright.
At the same time, the most thorough and comprehensive review of this collection of essays from NC writers has just been published in the Spring 2025 issue of the North Carolina Literary Review. You can read the review here, and we encourage you to subscribe to the publication here.
“The Generative Legacy of Paul Green” was written by Sally Greene, who earned a JD from Washington University and a PhD from UNC Chapel Hill. She is a prolific independent scholar and an at-large member of the Orange County Commission. Prior to that, she served three terms on the Chapel Hill Town Council. Her essay is the 2025 Paul Green Prize Winner as awarded by NCLR. Don’t miss this astute and thoughtful account of the book and its essayists.
“The Playmaker” film concludes Southern Tour while “Problem of the Hero” moves to streaming
At the end of March, Filmmaker Hannah Bowman concluded her Southern Circuit tour of “The Playmaker”—a biographical documentary of playwright Paul Green. The film was selected by South Arts for the tour and was presented in Clemson, SC, Charlotte, NC, and Wilmington. Bowman (pictured left, above) reported: “The highlight of the tour was getting to show the film at Jengo's Playhouse in Wilmington - a beautiful little theater, and a wonderfully-engaged audience.”
Meanwhile, the 2024 feature film, “The Problem of the Hero,” based on the relationship of Paul Green and novelist Richard Wright as they prepared to adapt Wright’s novel for a Broadway audience, is now streaming on Tubi, Amazon, Broadway on Demand, AppleTV - and other services. Reviews by critics and viewers have been enthusiastic.
Gifts to the Paul Green Foundation
help cover operations
The Paul Green Foundation has been supported by many theatre and human rights advocates over the years. While our grant programs are supported by the Foundation's modest endowment, our operations are largely supported by royalties and gifts from individuals. We keep our overhead very low and work hard to keep the values and legacy of North Carolina's Dramatist Laureate alive. We welcome your gifts. Every donation helps.
